Two subspecies of Buller's albatross are endemic to New Zealand: southern Buller's albatross (Thalassarche bulleri bulleri), and northern Buller's or Pacific albatross (Thalassarche bulleri platei). Buller's albatrosses are frequently observed caught in surface longline and trawl fisheries. The two subspecies are difficult to distinguish, and estimates are provided for the captures of both subspecies combined.

In the 2002–03 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in hake trawl fisheries in the Stewart Snares Shelf area. No estimates of total captures were made.
