There are two subspecies of Cape petrel that occur in New Zealand waters, the Cape petrel (Daption capense capense), and the Snares Cape petrel (Daption capense australe) that breeds on The Snares.
In the 2002–03 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in ling trawl fisheries in the Auckland Islands area. No estimates of total captures were made.
