The endemic Chatham Island albatross (Thalassarche eremita) breeds only on The Pyramid, a small island in the Chatham Islands group. Most observed captures in New Zealand fisheries have been in bottom longline fisheries on the Chatham Rise.

In the 2004–05 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in flatfish trawl fisheries in the West Coast South Island area. No estimates of total captures were made.
