Gulls, terns, shags, and gannets are primarily coastal seabirds. Species that have been observed caught in fisheries include southern black-backed gull (Larus dominicanus dominicanus), red-billed gull (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus), spotted shag (Stictocarbo punctatus), and pied shag (Phalacrocorax varius varius).
In the 2004–05 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in flatfish trawl fisheries in the Cook Strait area. No estimates of total captures were made.
