Gulls, terns, shags, and gannets are primarily coastal seabirds. Species that have been observed caught in fisheries include southern black-backed gull (Larus dominicanus dominicanus), red-billed gull (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus), spotted shag (Stictocarbo punctatus), and pied shag (Phalacrocorax varius varius).

In the 2002–03 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in shark setnet fisheries in the Bay of Plenty area. No estimates of total captures were made.
