Gulls, terns, shags, and gannets are primarily coastal seabirds. Species that have been observed caught in fisheries include southern black-backed gull (Larus dominicanus dominicanus), red-billed gull (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus), spotted shag (Stictocarbo punctatus), and pied shag (Phalacrocorax varius varius).
Between 2002–03 and 2020–21, there was no observed fishing in shark setnet fisheries in the Bay of Plenty area.
