The prions are small widespread pelagic seabirds, of the genus Pachyptila. Species that breed in the New Zealand region include the fairy prion (Pachyptila turtur), the broad-billed prion (Pachyptila vittata), the Antarctic prion (Pachyptila desolata), and the fulmar prion (Pachyptila crassirostris). These species have all been observed as bycatch in New Zealand fisheries.

In the 2003 calendar year, there was no observed fishing in hapuka longline fisheries in the Taranaki area. No estimates of total captures were made.
