Sooty shearwater (Puffinus griseus) breed in southern New Zealand. They are frequently reported caught in New Zealand fisheries, particularly in southern trawl fisheries. Sooty shearwater chicks are also harvested as muttonbirds.

In the 2002–03 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in bottom longline fisheries in the West Coast North Island area. No estimates of total captures were made.
