Sooty shearwater (Puffinus griseus) breed in southern New Zealand. They are frequently reported caught in New Zealand fisheries, particularly in southern trawl fisheries. Sooty shearwater chicks are also harvested as muttonbirds.

In the 2003 calendar year, there was no observed fishing in deepwater trawl fisheries in the Cook Strait area. No estimates of total captures were made.
