Sooty shearwater (Puffinus griseus) breed in southern New Zealand. They are frequently reported caught in New Zealand fisheries, particularly in southern trawl fisheries. Sooty shearwater chicks are also harvested as muttonbirds.

In the 2021* calendar year, there was no observed fishing in hapuka longline fisheries in the Taranaki area. No estimates of total captures were made.
