Storm petrels are small pelagic seabirds in the family Hydrobatidae. Storm petrels are infrequently reported as bycatch in New Zealand fisheries. Species that have been observed caught include white-faced storm petrel (Pelagodroma marina maoriana), black-bellied storm petrel (Fregetta tropica), and grey-backed storm petrel (Garrodia nereis).

In the 2020–21 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in bottom longline fisheries in the Stewart Snares Shelf area. No estimates of total captures were made.
