There are two sub-species of wandering albatross endemic to New Zealand: Antipodean albatross (Diomedea antipodensis antipodensis) and Gibson's albatross (Diomedea antipodensis gibsoni). Wandering albatrosses are mainly reported caught in surface longline fisheries.
In the 2020–21 fishing year, there was no observed fishing in hapuka longline fisheries in the East Coast North Island area. No estimates of total captures were made.
