New Zealand white-capped albatross (Thalassarche cauta steadi) are endemic to New Zealand, breeding on the Auckland Islands. They are caught in a range of fisheries, with a particularly high catch rate in the Auckland Islands' squid trawl fishery. A related subspecies, the Tasmanian albatross (Thalassarche cauta cauta), is endemic to Australia. No confirmed captures of Tasmanian albatross have been recorded in New Zealand fisheries.
