They are caught in a range of fisheries, with a particularly high catch rate in the Auckland Islands' squid trawl fishery. A related subspecies, the Tasmanian albatross (Thalassarche cauta cauta), is endemic to Australia. No confirmed captures of Tasmanian albatross have been recorded in New Zealand fisheries.
In the 2020–21 fishing year, there was no shark setnet fishing in the West Coast South Island area. No estimates of total captures were made.
